MEET OUR 2021 HELOTES CANDIDATES
For Helotes Mayor
for Helotes Mayor
Schoolcraft has proudly served as Mayor of Helotes since May 24, 2007. I pledged to work hard, and I have kept that pledge. Before COVID-19, I would spend part of every business day at City Hall working with our great staff to serve your needs and to build on those things that make Helotes such a unique community. I still spend time there as necessary but also work remotely at times.
Schoolcraft Graduated from Texas A&M University, Class of 1966, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Construction. A small business owner since 1976 building custom homes and small commercial projects. Have served the Helotes community in numerous capacities for 41 years. I have championed for low property taxes, fiscal responsibility, transparency at City Hall, balanced budgets and “clean” audits, improving parks, and providing competitive salaries and benefits for all City employees. Above all, I have prioritized our health, safety, and general welfare by maintaining and improving our emergency services departments. Schoolcraft believes building a strong sense of community is very important. Sponsoring Eagle Scout projects, working with citizens, building our park system and our many community events throughout the year are some of the things that make Helotes a great place live, play, and work.
As Mayor of Helotes, I will continue to prioritize public safety, street and drainage projects, enhancements for small businesses, excellent city services, open and transparent government, balanced budgets, and low property taxes. I will continue to provide positive leadership as your Mayor!

for Helotes Mayor
My name is Rich Whitehead and I am running for Mayor. I am uniquely qualified due to my experience, education, and vision. I earned my MBA in International Business from Clarkson University in 1997, was a board member of a 17 county economic development association, was the CFO of a local construction company, been involved with employee benefits for 24 years, and have volunteered at local Helotes area churches for the past 20 years. Currently I am a Captain for the San Antonio Fire Department, where I have been employed for 16 years. Beyond my positions, I also served as a trustee for 9 years for the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association, served on their legislative committee for 5 years as well as their arbitration committee. In addition to my financial management and legislative experience, I have also served 4 years as an elected Helotes councilman.
Besides resume qualifications, I have a vision and a plan for the protection and betterment of our city. I plan to perform the much needed financial assessment of our dispatch center to allow city council to determine the best use of our city resources so that we can not only provide excellent 911 service, but stop the continual loss of Police and Fire Fighters due to low pay, insure increased public safety budgets, and reduce the financial and time burdens imposed on our local businesses from excessive permit fees, regulations and redundant application processes. Additionally, as Mayor, I will exercise wisdom to not get involved with frivolous law suits that drain our cash reserves.
Finally, I plan to restore the nature of what Helotes was built upon by fostering relationships, friendships, and sense of community by bringing back community events like Jazz Fest, cook-offs, and market days, and encouraging and HELPING people who want to create and develop new events, which not only help the local businesses, but provide opportunities for neighbors to get out and enjoy life together.

Matthew McCrossen is a Cedar Springs resident, father of two amazing Kuentz Coyotes, U.S. Army Combat Veteran with four tours in Iraq, owner of two Helotes small businesses, Helotes News and McCrossen Marketing & Consulting. He is a former Helotes Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) director of the board, and Cedars Springs HOA, Inc. director of the board and board president.
Matt moved to Helotes from San Antonio where he served in several organizations while attending St. Mary’s University and completed his BBA in Applied Management Cum Laude after leaving active duty service. His San Antonio community service includes City of San Antonio Small Business Advocacy Committee District 8 appointee and committee chairman, vice president of both the Vance Jackson Neighborhood Association, Colonies House Pool and Tennis Club.
Matt is running for Helotes City Council Place 3 as a reformer. Matthew’s two main goals are reforming our city government and HEDC. In terms of city government, this means establishment of a charter committee and converting Helotes into a Home Rule City with our own charter created by the citizens. In terms of the HEDC, removing the City Administrator as the HEDC’s Executive Director, having councilmembers responsible for nominees correlating to their place numbers with a mechanism for the remaining two board places, and several other human resource items to avoid issues from the past, and close gaps where politicians can exploit the organization.

My name is Matthew Merchant and I am proud to announce that I am running for Helotes City Council Seat 5! After serving 20 years in the United States Navy, the military transferred my wife (also a 20 Navy vet!) to the San Antonio metro area in 2013. We immediately felt welcomed and knew we’d found “our place”. We purchased our home and decided we would retire and raise our family here. During my time in service I deployed many times highlighted by two combat jaunts as a Navy Corpsman serving with the United States Marine Corps, once in 2004 to Fallujah, Iraq and again in 2006 to Ramadi, Iraq, both times during times of heightened aggression. I believe what I learned while serving taught me what it takes to be an effective council member. I embrace the philosophy of servant leadership, that is, as a servant, it’s my job to listen, comprehend, communicate and work toward the best possible solution to meet the priorities set forth by the community in order to build a stronger Helotes, for your children and for mine. I attended UTSA (Go Runners!) and earned my B.A. in History with a concentration in Social Studies and a Secondary Education Teaching Certification. I am proud to say that I am an NISD teacher. I believe my service, leadership experience and education make me a sound candidate for Helotes City Council and look forward to discussing your concerns on how we can make Helotes an even better place to live and grow. I am very interested in increasing public safety, small business growth, and maintaining the charm that it is Helotes.
